It wasn’t long before I felt Axel’s hand resting on my shoulder.

“Hi.”

“Q is off, then?”

“Yep. It’s always hard to say goodbye.”

“I know.” I gave his hand a squeeze and he smiled at me.

Axel leaned over and looked our father in the eye. “Dad, can you tell us now?”

He was silent for many long minutes, and then his story tumbled out. It was disjointed and fraught with emotional sounds of distress, but we learned enough to piece things together.

“I was there. In Gladstone. I got off the ferry and walked around the town. It’s like Destiny Falls. But it isn’t. It’s dark. Ominous.” He shivered and hugged himself, his hands rubbing up and down his arms as if to keep warm. “I found Emily’s Café.”

I gasped then covered my mouth so as not to interrupt his story.

“It was my Emily! She was the same as last I saw her. The same. The very same. Beautiful. Vibrant. I had to talk to her. Touch her to see if she was real.”

He paused and his eyes closed. He was remembering. A smile lit his face for a brief moment.

“It was her.”

We were silent and still. Neither one of us wanted to break the spell of his story. The only sound was our breathing, until he spoke again.

“She didn’t see my age, my wrinkles, the gray in my hair. She saw me. The years had not dimmed our love. It had not weakened our ties. We spent the day. Talking. Not talking. Loving. Laughing. It felt so good to really laugh. We fell asleep on the beach, like the young couple we once were.”

His face changed. It became pale and tight. His hands clenched into fists. The haunted look returned.

“I woke up on the ferry.”

“But Dad,” Axel’s voice was gentle but insistent, “that was two weeks ago. Where have you been?”

“I stayed on the ferry. It went back and forth. But every time it landed, I was back in Destiny Falls.”

“You stayed on the ferry for two weeks!?” I was in shock.

“Weeks, days, hours? I lost time. I lost myself. I lost my Emily. Again.” This time when he put his face in his hands he began to sob. His body heaving with a deep and painful loss.

Axel put his arm around our father’s shoulders and spoke quietly. “Let’s get you home.”
